Sclerotherapy is an effective and minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins and other vascular problems. This involves injecting a special sclerosing solution, usually a saline solution or other medication, directly into the affected vein. This solution causes a reaction that irritates and shrinks the vein's inner wall, causing the vein to close and eventually dissolve. This redirects blood to the healthy veins, eliminating the visible varicose veins and improving blood circulation.
Sclerotherapy is often used for both cosmetic and medical purposes, such as reducing pain and discomfort caused by varicose veins, and improving the appearance of the legs.
Sclerotherapy is suitable for people who suffer from various types of vascular problems, such as:
• Varicose veins: these enlarged, twisted veins are often visible on the surface of the skin, especially on the legs.
• Small varices: smaller, superficial veins that may also be visible, but less prominent than varicose veins.
• Other abnormal blood vessels: this may include dilated blood vessels that do not function properly.
• Haemorrhoids: although less common, sclerotherapy can also be used to treat haemorrhoids.
The treatment is particularly useful for people who experience symptoms such as:
• Pain: discomfort or pain in the legs due to varicose veins.
• Swelling: accumulation of fluid in the legs, leading to swelling.
• Cramps: unusual muscle cramps in the legs.
• Feeling heavy: a tiring or heavy feeling in the legs.
In addition, sclerotherapy is also often performed for cosmetic reasons to improve the appearance of varicose veins. In Belgium, sclerotherapy is authorised for people aged 18 and over.
Before treatment begins, patients are asked to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes. It is also advisable not to take aspirin or other anti-inflammatory drugs for several days before the procedure to minimise the risk of bleeding.
The doctor disinfects the area to be treated and then injects the sclerosing solution with a thin needle directly into the affected vein. This solution irritates the inner wall of the vein, closing it and redirecting blood to healthier veins.
A compression bandage or stocking is often applied after the injection. This helps compress the treated veins and promotes blood flow in the healthy veins.
The entire procedure takes about 20 to 45 minutes, depending on the number and size of the veins to be treated.
• Minimally invasive: no surgery required.
• Short recovery time: patients can often return to their daily activities quickly.
• Effective: highly effective in reducing or eliminating visible varicose veins.
• Multiple sessions: sometimes several treatments are needed to achieve the desired results.
• Temporary side effects: bruising, swelling, redness and itching may occur at the injection site.
• Cosmetic effects: may cause minor brown discolouration of the skin.
• Allergic reaction: possible allergic reaction to the sclerosing solution.
• Inflammation: inflammation and swelling in the treated vein.
• Blood clots: formation of blood clots in the vein.
• Ulcerations: ulcerations or wounds at the injection site.

After treatment, patients are advised to wear compression stockings for several weeks to promote healing. It is important to walk immediately after treatment to improve blood circulation. Heavy exertion and prolonged standing or sitting should be avoided for the first few days after treatment. Any side effects, such as bruising or redness, usually disappear within a few days to weeks.
Regular follow-up appointments at I Care Clinic may also be necessary to monitor progress and schedule further treatments if necessary.
At I Care Clinic, the price for sclerotherapy is from €100.
