Depending on the treated area
Dermatological cryotherapy is a medical treatment in which extreme cold is used to treat benign skin abnormalities. Liquid nitrogen, which has a temperature of about -196 °C, is used during the treatment. The aim is to freeze and destroy unwanted tissue. This method is particularly effective for treating warts (such as common, genital, and age-related warts), actinic keratoses and other benign skin lesions. Cryotherapy, or freezing with liquid nitrogen, is one of the oldest and most proven treatment methods in dermatology.
At I Care Clinic, we have extensive experience with this treatment, so you can be assured of expert care and optimal results.
Cryotherapy is an effective treatment method for a wide range of benign skin conditions. It is often used for the following problems:
• Warts (common, genital, and age-related warts)
• Actinic keratosis (sun damage)
• Lentigo solaris (pigmentation spots)
• Syringomas (sweat gland tumours)
• Keratoacanthoma (benign skin tumours)
• Keloid (thickened scar tissue)
• Various granulomas (such as teleangiectatic, annulare, facial)
• Cushion devil (chondrodermatitis nodularis helicis)
• Prurigo nodularis
• Lichen planus (small inflammations on the inside of the cheeks)
• Cutaneous leishmaniasis (ulcers caused by stings from sand flies)
• Leukoplakia (condition of the oral mucosa)
During dermatological cryotherapy, liquid nitrogen is used to freeze skin lesions. This nitrogen has an extreme temperature of about -196 °C. The freezing causes tissue damage, causing the abnormal skin part to die off and be replaced by new, healthy skin. After treatment, a (blood) blister often forms under the skin abnormality. This blister dries out and forms a scab, which falls off along with the skin defect.
The number of treatment sessions required varies from patient to patient and depends on the location, size and nature of the skin defect. Often a repeat procedure is needed 1 or 2 more times. After a successful treatment, skin abnormalities can sometimes reappear.
During an initial consultation, the practitioner assesses your skin and discusses your expectations and wishes.
Liquid nitrogen is administered via the spray technique. This is done by spraying the nitrogen at a distance of about 1 cm from the skin defect (such as a wart) with a special device. The skin defect immediately turns white due to the freezing.
• Effectiveness: cryotherapy is quick and effective for removing common skin abnormalities.
• Minimal invasiveness: the treatment does not require surgery, leading to fewer risks and shorter recovery time.
• Outpatient procedure: the treatment can usually be performed in the doctor's office, without having to go to hospital.
• Cost: cryotherapy is often cost-effective compared to other treatment methods.
• Pain: you may experience some pain after the treatment.
• Discolouration: temporary discolouration of the skin may occur.
• Scarring: small scars may appear on the treated areas.
• Infections: there is a small risk of infections after treatment.
