What is gastric bypass?

A gastric bypass, or stomach bypass, is a surgery that helps with weight loss for people who are severely overweight. During this operation, we shrink the stomach and reroute part of the small intestine. This allows you to eat less food and your body absorbs fewer nutrients.

Everything you need to know about gastric bypass

Who is gastric bypass suitable for?

A gastric bypass is mainly intended for people with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or higher, or for those with a BMI of 35-40 who also have serious obesity-related health problems, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnoea. It is important that you have tried to lose weight with diet and exercise without lasting results. In Belgium, you can undergo gastric bypass if you are 18 years or older.

How does gastric bypass work?

Gastric bypass is usually performed via laparoscopy, a minimally invasive technique where we make small incisions for minimal impact. The surgeon creates a small stomach pouch at the top of your stomach and connects it directly to part of the small intestine. This bypasses the rest of your stomach and part of your intestine. This means your stomach is much smaller and your body absorbs fewer calories and nutrients.

What are the pros and cons of gastric bypass?

Advantages:

- Significant weight loss: many people lose 60-80% of their excess weight, which makes a big difference.
- Improvement in health problems: obesity-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure can significantly improve or even disappear.
- improved quality of life: you will find that you move better, have more energy and your self-confidence gets a big boost.

Disadvantages:

- Surgical complications: as with any surgery, there are risks of complications, such as infection, bleeding and leakage of the connections between the stomach and intestine.
- Nutritional deficiencies: due to the reduced absorption of nutrients, you may experience deficiencies in vitamins and minerals, requiring additional supplementation.
- Dumping syndrome: food may enter the small intestine too quickly, causing symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, sweating and diarrhoea.

RECOVERY:

After surgery, the patient usually stays in hospital for several days. A strict liquid and then a soft diet is followed for the first few weeks after surgery to give the stomach a chance to heal. Gradual reintroduction of solid food is done under the guidance of a dietician.

FOLLOW-UP CARE:

  • Regular follow-up with the surgeon, dietician and possibly a psychologist are crucial to ensure the success of the surgery
  • Lifelong supplementation: vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin B12, iron and calcium, often need to be taken for life
  • Diet and exercise: a healthy diet and regular exercise are essential to maintain weight loss and prevent complications

A Gastric Bypass can be an effective tool for long-term weight loss and health improvement, but it requires dedication and lifestyle adjustments to be successful.
