Are your eyelids subject to gravity or do you have a tired or older-looking appearance due to too much or sagging tissue above or below the eyelids? Then eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is the procedure that can help you look fresher or younger and boost your self-confidence back. During a lower eyelid correction or upper eyelid correction, we remove excess skin and/or fat from the upper and/or lower eyelids. This will make that tired, ageing look a thing of the past and give you a fresh look again .
Eyelid correction, in both men and women, is one of the most frequently performed treatments at I Care Clinic. Although eyelid surgery is mainly associated with ageing, younger people from the age of 18 can also qualify, especially if they suffer from droopy eyelids or puffiness due to genetic factors.
At I Care Clinic, Dr Decoene, aesthetic surgeon, performs all eyelid corrections. By performing the procedure by a qualified and experienced professional, we ensure the maximum effectiveness and safety of this treatment.
A lower eyelid correction is more difficult than an upper eyelid correction. It requires quite a bit of métier to achieve a beautiful result, which is why some clinics and surgeons are rather reluctant to do it. At I Care Clinic, Dr Decoene has specialised in this procedure over the years.
Pendulous eyelids make you look older and more tired than you really are. Drooping eyelids are caused by excess skin on the upper eyelids. This can disrupt the natural contour of the upper eyelid and even impair vision.
With an upper eyelid correction, the excess skin and fat is removed or redistributed. This is done through small incisions along the natural folds of the upper eyelid.
Fat accumulation under the eyes leads to unsightly puffiness or ‘puffy eyes’. This makes you look older and more tired than you really are.
A lower eyelid correction involves removing or redistributing the excess skin and fat. This is done through small incisions just below the lash line.
An eyelid correction on the upper and/or lower eyelids is performed under local anaesthesia, making the procedure painless. The treatment time is 90 to 120 minutes. At I Care Clinic, your comfort and safety are always paramount.
Before Dr Decoene gets started, we schedule a consultation of about 30 minutes. During this consultation, the doctor gets a good idea of your situation and medical history. Among other things, possible eye abnormalities, thyroid problems or other factors that may affect you are examined. In addition, photographs are taken to analyse the cause of your tired eye.
Before surgery, we thoroughly clean the eyes and surrounding skin. Then the area is locally anaesthetised so that you do not feel any pain during the procedure.
The surgeon makes small incisions along the natural folds of your upper eyelid or just below the lash line on the lower eyelid. Excess skin and fat are then removed or redistributed. The entire treatment takes about 90 to 120 minutes.
After the procedure, the incisions are carefully closed with fine sutures. These are usually removed after a week.
Below is an overview of the cost of an eyelid correction at I Care Clinic, including VAT:
Upper eyelid correction: € 1500
Lower eyelid correction: € 1500
Upper and lower eyelid correction: € 2500
For purely aesthetic eyelid corrections, health insurance does not intervene in the costs. However, if the eyelid correction is carried out for medical reasons (excessive skin sag resulting in vision problems), a financial contribution may be claimed.
The healing process after eyelid correction is usually fast and smooth. Shortly after the procedure, a drop of blood may still flow from the wounds, but this is not worrying. The pain, swelling and discolouration usually subside after 1-2 weeks. The stitches are removed after a week, but before then you should not exert any great effort (heavy physical work or sports). This can be done again after 2 to 3 weeks. Administrative work is allowed from removal of the stitches.
Points of attention:
The side effects of the procedure are minimal and disappear by themselves after a few days. These include:
Serious complications are rare with eyelid surgery. However, smoking, alcohol consumption and blood thinners can increase the risk of complications. If you carefully follow your doctor's recommendations regarding aftercare, the risk of a serious complication is significantly reduced.

Eyelid correction is done under local anaesthetic, so the procedure itself is not painful. After the procedure, patients may experience slight pain, swelling and bruising, but this is usually well controlled with painkillers and/or cold compresses.
You can usually return to work after 7-10 days. This is for administrative tasks. With heavy physical work and intense sports, it is best to wait 2 to 3 weeks. Swelling and bruising decrease gradually in the first few weeks. The final result is usually clearly visible after a few months.
The results of an eyelid correction remain visible for a long time (at least 5 to 10 years). However, keep in mind that the skin continues to age. Results over time are influenced by lifestyle and genetic factors.
The incisions are very fine and fall into the natural folds of the eyelid, making them easy to hide. Over time, they usually fade to almost invisible lines.
Cosmetic eyelid corrections are not covered by health insurance. With medical eyelid corrections (restriction of vision due to drooping eyelids), however, you can usually claim compensation.
It is not recommended to wear contact lenses in the first week after surgery to avoid disturbing the healing process. After about 1 to 2 weeks, it can usually be done again.
For insurance reasons, you should not drive a car immediately or shortly after the operation. We recommend that you wait 7-10 days for recovery to set in.
