All you need to know about breast augmentation

Who is this procedure suitable for?

Breast augmentation is ideal for women who are not completely satisfied with the natural size or shape of their breasts. Whether due to genetic factors, changes after pregnancy, weight loss or ageing, many women choose this procedure to feel better about their bodies. Breast augmentation can also help create more balance between your breasts and your body type or correct asymmetry.

It is a personal choice that can have a big impact on your life, so it is important that you are well informed and have realistic expectations. We are happy to explain exactly what the procedure entails and what you can expect.

Who is eligible for breast augmentation?

If you are 18 years or older and do not feel comfortable with your breasts because of:

  • Breasts that are too small
  • Weight loss
  • Aging
  • Changes after pregnancy
  • Asymmetry

Then breast augmentation might be for you. We are happy to help you on your way to feeling fuller and more confident!

What kind of breast prostheses are there??

Breast prostheses come in different types, depending on their content, shape and surface area. Each type comes in various sizes, so we can always find something that fits you perfectly.
The outside of each breast prosthesis is always made of silicone. This body-friendly material is well tolerated and has been successfully used in all kinds of medical applications for many years. The content consists of cohesive silicone gel, which ensures a natural feel. The shape of the prosthesis is round and flexible, which makes your breasts look natural when you stand upright.

Dr. Decoene will be happy to discuss all options with you, including the pros and cons of each type of implant. Together, you will choose the prosthesis that best suits your needs and body.

How does the procedure work?

Breast augmentation involves inserting a prosthesis to give your breasts more volume. This is done through a small incision under the breast and under full anaesthesia. The prostheses are inserted behind the pectoral muscle to minimise the risk of capsular contracture.

01

Consultation

Everything starts with a consultation with the surgeon. Together you will discuss your wishes and expectations. The surgeon explains what types of implants there are, the different shapes (round or anatomical), and the possible placements (behind the pectoral muscle or directly behind the breast tissue).

02

Preparation

Before the operation, your breasts and the surrounding area are thoroughly cleaned. You will then be given a general anaesthetic so that you do not notice anything about the procedure.

03

The preparation

The surgeon makes an incision at the agreed location, such as the base of the breast, around the nipple, or in the armpit. The implant is then inserted. The whole procedure takes about 1 hour.

04

Closing the incisions

Finally, the incisions are neatly stitched, and your path to feeling fuller and more confident begins!

Aftercare tips

It is important to follow a few tips after the procedure to ensure smooth recovery from the breast augmentation. During the first week after the procedure, make sure to avoid heavy exertion and take regular rest.

Regarding exercise, the major pectoral muscle can feel painful and stiff. Here are a few tips:

  • After 2 weeks, light activity can gradually be resumed.
  • 8 weeks after the procedure, you can return to sports.
  • For the first 8 weeks after the procedure, wear a sports bra day and night to provide adequate support.

Pamper your body and take care of the treated area as follows:

  • During the first week after the procedure, apply ice wrapped in a towel around the breast for 10 to 15 minutes, 4 times a day. Never apply ice directly to the skin.
  • After 2 weeks, you can begin massaging both breasts. Use a moisturizing cream for this. Massaging helps promote external scar healing. Use your thumb to make circular motions over the scar.

After breast augmentation, you may possibly suffer from:

  • Pain and stiffness of the muscles this for several days
  • Infection
  • Haemorrhage
  • Capsular contracture
  • Swelling of the breasts
  • Shifting or leakage of the prosthesis
  • Change in nipple sensation for up to a year after the procedure
  • Hypersensitivity when touching the breasts for several weeks.

How long does breast augmentation aftercare last?

arrow

Pain and swelling are normal in the first weeks after surgery and gradually reduce. Full healing may take several months, after which the final results will be visible.

For a pleasant and speedy recovery, we apply an adhesive bandage or sports bra immediately after surgery to provide support and comfort. The bandage prevents excessive movement and ensures the prostheses stay in place.
2 weeks after the procedure, there will be a check-up consultation during which the dressing will be removed. During this consultation, the wires are removed and Dr Decoene examines the position of the prostheses and the swelling of the mammary gland. After the check-up consultation, the surgical scars may remain uncovered.
