Melasma (also called ‘pregnancy mask’) is a pigmentary disorder in which dark brown spots appear on the skin. These spots are moderately to sharply defined and usually irregular in shape. Melasma is particularly common on the forehead, cheeks, temples, around the eyes and on the upper lip. Melasma occurs mainly in women of childbearing age and in people with darker skin.
Melasma spots can occur symmetrically on both sides of the face. They are usually triggered by hormonal changes (pregnancy, hormonal contraception...) and genetic predisposition. UV radiation also stimulates melanocytes (pigment-producing cells) to produce more melanin (pigment), which can lead to melasma.
It is already recommended to shield your body from direct and harmful sun rays by using the right sunscreen and wearing sun hat.
At I Care Clinic, we will prepare a personalised melasma diagnosis and treatment plan that best suits your specific situation. Book an appointment now.
