It is possible that your breast prostheses are still intact after 10 years, although their quality decreases with age. For this reason, we recommend timely replacement of your breast prostheses. Replacing breast prostheses differs slightly from an initial breast augmentation because the pocket was already made during the initial procedure.
When replacing breast prostheses, the surgeon will remove the old prostheses and replace them with new or possibly larger or different type of prostheses. In the latter case, the surgeon should check whether the existing pocket is sufficient to fit the new prostheses. While the operation may be more complicated, experience tells us that recovery is also faster when breast prostheses are replaced.
If you have breast prostheses replaced, keeping the same size is the simplest solution. With a prosthesis change, it is of course possible to fit larger prostheses to obtain a larger cup size. You should then be aware that you may again experience pain and discomfort in the first few days after surgery, similar to the first breast augmentation. The fitting of smaller prostheses is a more complex operation, as the pre-existing pocket has to be reduced in size.
If the prosthesis change also requires removal of capsular tissue, we recommend opting for slightly larger prostheses. The capsule will have made the existing pocket slightly larger. This extra space will need to be backfilled afterwards.
